Davis

We’re in Davis, CA and everything is going well. We took a short trip over to South Lake Tahoe when we first got here. Since Davis was so hot, we didn’t check the weather and assumed that Tahoe would be the same. While driving there, the clouds ahead started to darken and then we saw lightning and heard thunder. We didn’t turn around and got there to find a very glum town. Originally, we planned to stay two nights. There’s nothing to do when there’s a thunderstorm and it was somewhat too late to drive back so we stayed at Harrah’s for the night and gambled. Won $7, $3, and lost $13 playing video poker. It was good just to get away.

Daniel and I both started our new jobs — going okay so far. We’ll see if we love it or hate it. We spent the Fourth just hanging out. Went downtown to see Pixar’s Cars. Great movie. Bought some books from Borders. I got Daniel to start reading a fiction book. Gasp! It’s not about money or the stock market! While downtown, we saw some bike races. Sections of downtown were blocked off and these bicylists just race around in circles. If you stand in one spot, they come by every minute or so. Doesn’t seem very exciting. At night, we drove out just in time for fireworks. No fighting for spots on a sloping hill, no crowds to wade through. Just people here and there sitting on grass patches and standing in sidewalks. Since Davis is so flat, I think people can see the show from all parts of town.

I got a bike and I haven’t ridden a bike since I was 8. My dad’s a little worried about safety but there are wide bike lanes on practically every single road. One thing I don’t like here is that people leave their yard waste next to the sidewalk which sometimes obstruct the bike lane. I appreciate the nice landscaping and consistently mowed lawns but dump the yard waste!

Things to do: talk to priest here about marriage preparation classes, make friends, get un-sick.
